Not all ophthalmologists specialize in low vision rehabilitation. A low vision specialist designs optical and non-optical aids specifically calibrated to your remaining sight. Ask your GP or ophthalmologist for a referral. This is the single highest-leverage appointment you can make.

Manuscript Formatting for Visual Accessibility

Your document settings matter as much as your software. These are the specific configurations your TechEase advisor will help you implement.

Microsoft Word / Google Docs — Recommended Settings
Font: Georgia or Atkinson Hyperlegible, 16–18pt minimum Atkinson Hyperlegible (free from Google) is specifically designed for low-vision users and improves reading accuracy in research by up to 25%.
Line spacing: 1.5 to 2.0, never single-spaced Increased line spacing reduces the visual tracking error that causes eye fatigue during extended writing sessions.
Zoom level in Word: 125–150% View menu > Zoom. Save as your default template. You're changing how you see it on screen, not the document itself.
Enable Word's Read Aloud (View > Read Aloud) Microsoft Word's built-in Read Aloud highlights each word as it speaks. Use it for proofreading passes without opening a separate app.
Background color: Off-white or light cream (not pure white) Pure white produces more glare than warm off-white tones. In Word: Page Color under the Design tab.
Cursor/pointer size: Large Windows: Settings > Accessibility > Mouse pointer > size 3 or larger. Mac: System Settings > Accessibility > Display > Pointer size. A larger cursor reduces visual search fatigue measurably.

The Writing Environment: Lighting and Ergonomics

The physical writing environment is as important as the tools. These are evidence-based adjustments, not preferences.

Lighting Direction

Light should come from the side or behind your screen, never from in front of you creating screen glare. A 60-watt-equivalent LED placed to the left of your screen reduces eye strain by lowering contrast between your screen and ambient light.

Screen Distance and Height

Low vision research recommends 20–24 inches from your eyes — closer than standard ergonomics suggest — to reduce squinting. Screen center should be at or slightly below eye level to reduce corneal exposure and dry eye during long sessions.

If your monitor is more than 5 years old, a 4K display (even a moderately priced one) dramatically improves text sharpness. On a 27” 4K display at 125% scaling, text clarity often eliminates the need for software magnification entirely.

Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This is the single most effective clinical recommendation for reducing digital eye strain. Pair with Night Shift (Mac) or Night Light (Windows) for evening writing sessions.
