Low Vision Specialist
Not all ophthalmologists specialize in low vision rehabilitation. A low vision specialist designs optical and non-optical aids specifically calibrated to your remaining sight. Ask your GP or ophthalmologist for a referral. This is the single highest-leverage appointment you can make.

An OT specializing in vision rehabilitation assesses your writing environment, screen ergonomics, lighting, and workflow. They prescribe adaptive strategies tailored to how you work. UC Davis Eye Center and VSP have excellent referral networks in Sacramento.

Many writers work with prescriptions 2+ years old. Proper refraction for screen distance specifically reduces eye fatigue during long writing sessions. A fresh prescription is the cheapest upgrade available.

Lighting Direction
Light should come from the side or behind your screen, never from in front of you creating screen glare. A 60-watt-equivalent LED placed to the left of your screen reduces eye strain by lowering contrast between your screen and ambient light.
